Aneorobic CHP Biodigester Project
Sustain have been asked by Cork County Council to look into ways in which we can reduce the amount of Organic Waste that makes up a staggering 38% of our Landfill content All County Councils are coming under pressure to meet targets that will be set by the Landfill Directive that comes int opalce in 2010.
We are of the view that we should maximise the possible returns out of our Organic Waste and after researching the matter we consider Aneorobic Biodigestion to be a good solution for rural areas sucha as West Cork as it has the potential to generate Heat & Power along with high grade fertiliser. We feel that the best model would be one of Community ownership of such a plant Sustain are looking into the feasability of a digester for a number of laocations in West Cork and would like to see one coupled with a Horticulture operation for growing food under Glass House or Polytunnel again in Community Ownership.
This project would hit a number of our targets :-
- Helping meet our landfill targets
- Creating Renewable Heat & Power
- Reduction of food miles
- Lower Carbon Emissions
- Creating Employment
- Strengthening Local Economies
- Building Local Community Resilience
